Cookbook Excerpts & Photos

We’re back in full swing! El Refugio reopened over the Día de Muertos weekend with a beautiful altar and a talk by Noel on the culture and philosophy behind this tradition. We’ve got new masks, new mezcal, and best of all, a new kitchen, thanks to the hard work of Noel and Miguel, the most recent addition to our team.

COOKBOOK NEWS

The manuscript is into the publisher, and we’ve been working on design details: cover and interior. Starting in December we’ll be doing a cookbook giveaway on social media (Instagram and Facebook), in collaboration with Nopalito Restaurant and their James Beard Award-Winning book. Stay tuned to get in on the action!

In February, we’ll be launching our crowdfunding campaign on Indigogo, where we’ll be giving away great prizes, like hand-carved mezcal copitas, a Mexican kitchen starter pack of chiles and herbs, and of course—the book! The purpose of the campaign is to raise funds to finish all the last details and bring you the best possible version. It’s also to raise interest and excitement in what has been a very intense labor of love!

AND NOW FOR A TEASER…

We’ll be posting a cultural and food photo along with an excerpt from now until our crowdfunding campaign begins in February.

You can follow us on Instagram to see them, or check in with our weekly blog.

Enjoy!

Food is what brings us together. It is what strengthens and heals our bodies and our relationships with one another. It is the common table of all humanity. How we arrive at that table is as important as the sustenance that it holds. It is these very elements that give the culture—and therefore the cuisine—of Mexico its depth and richness. We believe the preservation and sharing of these values is as important as the preservation of the cuisine itself. A cuisine, after all, is nothing without its culture, and the culture of Mexico is nothing without the values and traditions of its indigenous peoples.

Salsas are the base of Mexican cuisine. A good salsa makes a dish. The salsa is more important even than the meat it goes with; it’s what gives flavor to your life.
