The Pottery Masters of Atzompa, Oaxaca: A Video

If you’ve been to El Refugio in the last year, you’ll have noticed the beautiful clay copitas we serve our mezcal in. Unless you didn’t order mezcal. In which case. . .#$@%&???!!!. (It’s ok. We don’t judge you (too much). Mezcal isn’t—and can’t be—for everyone). Our friend, Luis Hernandez of Nomad Cook (well worth following!), created this video of the family that makes those copitas.

The Martinez family live in Atzompa, Oaxaca—a town where pottery making has been the primary economic activity for only, oh. . .1,300 years. This video shows their incredible work, and the cosmovision that inspires it. Check it out below.

If you enjoy that, you’re going to LOVE our cookbook. And speaking of—we’re doing a giveaway from now until February, 2020! Every two weeks we’ll be giving away a pair of cookbooks: ours—The Native Mexico Cookbook (title tbd)—and the Nopailto’s—a James Beard award-winning cookbook, also on fabulous Mexican cuisine.
