The El Refugio Survival Plan

You might not be surprised to hear that El Refugio—like most restaurants across the world—has shut it’s doors. Our reopening date and location are as yet unknown, but with some good luck and your support, we will reopen!

After an analysis of our costs, Noel and I decided to close our doors and move out. Restaurants generally survive month to month, or at best only a few months out. That’s especially true for those who operate in seasonal tourist towns. The cost of rent and utilities alone would have wiped us out, and so we’ve decided to let go of our space, tighten our belts, and hold our breaths until November. In the meantime, we’ll be doing a lot of gardening, studying, and cooking to prepare us. We’ll also be searching for a new—and hopefully even better!—space to reopen. If you know of a great space (even a piece of land to put a food truck on) contact us.

We have a few tricks up our sleeve to help us get through from now until then, which you can participate in. We’ll let you know as each opportunity becomes available (hint: anyone missing really good mezcal in US quarantine?).

Here’s how you can help right now:

MEZCAL SALES FOR BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR

If you’re in the Todos Santos/Pescadero area, we have mezcal for you! Contact us to get our bottle list. You can pay in cash or via paypal and we’ll deliver.

KNOW ANYONE LOOKING TO GET MARRIED OR HOST AN EVENT

IN TODOS SANTOS?

Have them contact us for a catering and bar proposal. The deposits we collect over the next few months for future events we will offer as an interest–free loan to our employees which they can work off bit–by–bit next season. We believe we have the best employees in Baja and hope to do what we can to help them get through this difficult time.

There’s more to come, so stay in touch!
